Important 2020 -2021 Season Announcement!

September 23, 2020

Dear GYBA Parents, Players and Coaches,

With a heavy heart, we regret to inform all GYBA families that Golden Youth Basketball Association will not have a 2020 - 2021 Winter Season due to COVID - 19 related concerns and restrictions put in place by Golden area schools.

Last week we had our follow-up Jeffco Basketball Board Meeting to finalize the plan for the Youth Winter Basketball Season (see original notice posted on the GYBA website).  It was determined that there would be a modified season and each organization needed to determine if they were going to participate.  After careful consideration, the GYBA Board determined we will not be participating for 2020 – 2021.  The decision was based on several key factors.

As you know, we rely heavily on the Elementary and Middle School facilities throughout Golden for practices and games.  Unlike other organizations in Jeffco, we do not have access to Rec Centers, Church Gyms, and numerous High School facilities, as do many of the groups.  Over the past four weeks, GYBA confirmed we have no available gym time (practice or games) at the Elementary and Middle schools through at least January 3, 2021 due to COVID - 19 concerns and restrictions.  At that time, they will re-evaluate and determine the policy going forward.  Additionally, Golden High School is not available.  Also, we reached out to the School of Mines who confirmed they will not be renting their facilities to outside parties.  Tony Grampsas was the only facility that had availability just for games.  These are GYBA's go to facilities each season.

Faced with this reality, the GYBA Board discussed the feasibility of having GYBA participate this season.  This included conferring with Coach Lou Vullo, the head boys basketball coach at Golden High School.  Coach Vullo helps oversee the GYBA High School 6th, 7th and 8th Grade Feeder Program.  Further, discussions included Shannon Garvin, the Director of Girls Basketball for GYBA and the Golden High School Level 3 Coach as well as other active parent coaches.

After weighing health concerns, available facilities, overall logistics, etc, in addition to understanding the fluidity of the COVID - 19 situation and ever-changing public policy, as well as the potential for “start – stop” scenarios due to mandatory quarantine guidelines,  GYBA determined it will not have an active program this season and will resume operations as normal for the 2021 -2022 season.

As mentioned, the decision was not easy, but we believe is appropriate in light of the COVID - 19 enviroment and GYBA's facility situation this season.

With that said, other Jeffco youth basketball organizations have opted to continue with a 2020-2021 modified season (see below) which JPSports will host through their JPS Winter League.  In an effort to allow interested GYBA kids and/or teams who still want to participate, GYBA has arranged for Just Play Sports (JPS) (a “for-Profit” company representing a majority of the youth basketball organizations throughout Jeffco) to allow interested Golden players and/or teams to register through JPS’s umbrella for the JPS Winter League.

  • Registration is open now through October 11, 2020, late fee of $15 after Oct 11, late fee of $25 after Oct 18.

  • Available for boys and girls grades 2 through 8.

If you have any questions about this feel free to reach out to JPS directly:

Thank you for your continued support of GYBA and we look forward to resuming "business as ussual" next season.  Stay safe and healthy.

Regards,

Golden Youth Basketball Association
